The 2010 Rose Festival Court Scholarship Program application process is now closed. Thank you to all the participating students and schools! Eligible candidates who have submitted an application MUST attend ONE of the following orientation sessions:

  • Saturday, January 16, 10:00 a.m. -- Madison High School Auditorium
    2735 NE 82nd Avenue - Portland, Oregon
  • Thursday, January 21, 6:30 p.m. -- Glencoe High School Library
    2700 NW Glencoe Road - Hillsboro, Oregon
  • Saturday, January 23, 4:00 p.m. -- World Trade Center
    25 SW Salmon Street - Portland, Oregon

To be eligible for the Rose Festival Court, candidates must:

  • Be Female
  • Attend a 5A or 6A high school in Multnomah, Washington or Clackamas counties
  • Be a senior graduating in June 2010 or a junior on track to graduate in June 2011
  • Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (applicants with GPA between 2.75 and 3.0 with exigent circumstances may still be eligible, complete the variance form included with this application)
  • Have a verifiable minimum of 20 hours community service performed during high school
  • Submit a complete application by December 18, 2009 (see below)
  • Attend one mandatory orientation session in January 2010 (see below)
  • Participate in the Court Selection process (see below)

A Complete Application (DUE December 18, 2009) includes:

  • Application Form (2 pages with signatures) - MUST BE TYPED
  • Biography Form - MUST BE TYPED
  • Recommendation Form (completed by a teacher, coach, school counselor, scholarship coordinator, vice principal or principal)
  • Signed Court Rules and Guidelines
  • Medical Form
  • Official High School Transcript with Cumulative GPA - sealed

Applications must be typed (as indicated above) using 10 pt or larger font and must have original signatures where required. No additional documents will be considered. Faxed or incomplete applications are not accepted. Applicants are responsible for all pieces of application, including recommendations and transcripts.

Orientation Sessions (January):
Candidates will be notified if they meet eligibility criteria by January 8, 2010. Eligible candidates must attend one of three orientation sessions scheduled in January. (Schedule will be included with notification).

Court Selection Process (February/March):
Rose Festival Court applicants are judged in one or more sessions at designated locations by a panel of judges from the community, selected by Rose Festival Board of Directors. Candidates will need to memorize a speech on the designated topic and answer impromptu questions in an interview setting. The selected Court Member will be announced on the Announcement Day for her school. If the selected Court Member is unable to serve, there is no runner-up. Judges will evaluate candidates based on the following criteria:

  • Character (50%): Demonstrates good citizenship, community-minded, involved in school and other activities, shows desires to help others.
  • Communication Skills (25%): Good verbal skills, speaks clearly, expresses herself appropriately, creative speech content, correct grammar, good eye contact.
  • Presence (25%): Poised under pressure, prepared for speech and interview, enthusiastic, sincere, comfortable with herself, appropriate grooming.
