The
Portland Rose Society
Annual Spring Rose Show is the largest and longest-running rose show in the nation. The exquisite beauty and fragrances of this yearly show emanate from more than 4,000 blooms. Entry is open to anyone, and all entrants are encouraged. Rose growers from across the Pacific Northwest participate, and some 6,000 spectators from across the country are expected to visit this year’s Spring Rose Show. Sparkling trophies go to those entrants who grow the most beautiful roses.

Mrs. Henry Pittock, wife of the first Oregonian publisher, along with some of her neighbors and friends, established the Portland Rose Society in 1889. Their vision was that Portlanders would perpetuate the glory of the rose throughout the years. Their dream has been kept in focus for more than a century by dedicated rose gardeners. From the first rose show in Mrs. Pittock’s own garden in King Heights to today’s extravaganzas at the Lloyd Center Ice Rink, the Rose Society has kept alive the intent and purpose of growing and showing the best of the best of roses for the enjoyment of the citizens of Portland.
Today, the Portland Rose Society has around 600 members. Aside from presenting one of the premier rose shows in the United States, the group has built the Gold Medal Garden and the Pavilion at the Washington Park International Rose Test Garden, and it aids in the rose pruning there. The society also conducts many rose pruning demonstrations in late winter, sponsors two other rose shows and gives free rose growing advice and assistance to those who request it. Membership is open to all who are interested in roses whether it’s one or two in a pot or a thousand in a garden.
