Clackamas - 2021 Spring Training Treasure Hunt: CLUE 1
April 27 (Tuesday)
You and I have a common bond
Of life, liberty and love to all.
These things have something in common.
If you figure it out, you’ll be on the ball:
Night, day, bulb, saber, flash, switch, high, lime.
-----
SOLUTION: Life, liberty and love all have the letter “L” in common. The words listed all either can begin or end with the word “light”, which begins with the letter “L”. Answer: Light

April 28 (Wednesday)
Get your quarter out (or nickel if you wonder).
Speed back in time to 1983.
Formulate one idea to play a game,
And play it well to be number one.
-----
SOLUTION: Pole Position was an arcade game released by Namco in 1982 and was the most popular coin-operated game in 1983. Playing it well leads the player to reach the “pole position” in the time trial lap required to then race against other cars in a Grand Prix championship race. Wording used in the clue is to try to get the reader to think of an arcade, and the words “formulate one” is a play on the race car used in the arcade game: a Formula One race car.
Answer: Pole (Position)

April 29 (Thursday)
Dorothy, Betty and others old
Have the dirt on this.
Red, white and blue is wise
To help keep your eye on your prize,
And you won’t miss!
-----
SOLUTION: Dorothy Kemenchek and Betty Cornett were prominent players in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. A prominent phrase for the league was "Dirt in the skirt". Their logo is red, white and blue. Phrases like "eye on the prize" and "you won't miss" were trying to get you to think of baseball: eye on the ball, missing a swing. Also, red white and blue were given to deter people from thinking of gold (for golden girls). Answer: Skirt

April 30 (Friday)
An unlucky princess and a dark knight
Will send you on your way.
Even though you walk through this shadowy place,
You’ll be like Mr. Williams if you have this kind of day.
-----
SOLUTION: Christian Bale is known for playing “Batman” in “The Dark Knight”. His first name is helpful to pointing the way to the “unlucky princess”, but is also important. Caroline Matilda was known as an “unlucky princess” and was married to King Christian VII. Her middle name, Matilda, helps out here. Christian and Matilda Deardorff established the Happy Valley area, first known as “Deardorff Valley”. If you “walk through the valley of the shadow of death” (another Christian reference), and heed Pharell Williams’ song “Happy” all answers put together should be pointing you to Happy Valley. Answer: Happy Valley

May 1 (Saturday)
She’s a lofty one they say,
A gal with many names.
Search for a battle that destroyed a bridge,
And you’ll have the right place to add a view.
-----
SOLUTION: Mt. Hood is one of the loftiest (tallest prominent point) in the nation. Mt. Hood has several other names in history including Wy’east and Timm Mountain. One native legend says Wy’east and the chief of the Klickitat tribe battled and the Bridge of the Gods was destroyed in the process. The term “add a view” wants solvers to add “view” to their answer to get to Hood View Park. Answer: Hood View

May 2 (Sunday)
Titus knew what he was building when he started a trend:
Sound the trumpet, and run the race - but not a straight line (a bend).
Though a circle does help you light the way,
Titus wants you to stay on the dark side to have a “buon” day.
-----
SOLUTION: Titus Vespasian (Greek) was the first to officially design and build a stadium in 70-80 AD. By the Roman empire, “stadium” was both a building and a unit of measurement (shaped originally in a U shape rather than a straight line). Originally created for foot races, a stadium race always began with a trumpet blast. Although a stadium isn’t a circle, it does help you get to the right circle in the park, as there are two. Another word for “dark” is “sinister” and “sinistro” is “left” in Italian. “Light the way” is also a reference to the light pole that is located at the circle turnaround in the park on SE Stadium Way. Answer: Stadium, Left Circle
